Types of charging stations

If you own, or are considering purchasing an electric vehicle, you should definitely consider installing a charging station in your own home or garage. But which charging station should you choose? How much does it cost? What will the installation look like? Let 50five support you.
Types of charging stations

What are the options?

Single or 3 phase

A charging station can be connected via single-phase or 3-phase. A 3-phase connection allows for a higher charging capacity.

Wall/pole mounting

A charging station can be mounted either against the wall or on a pole. It is important to take into account the distance to the parking space, so that you can minimise the length of charging cable required.

Charge card

If you are already driving an electric car you may already have a “charge pass” to recharge at public charging stations. Depending on the brand of the charging station, you could also use the same card at home to activate your charging station. You can start a charging session by simply holding the pass in front of the charging station.

Fixed or separate cable

Some charging stations have a fixed cable, while other charging stations require a separate cable. It is worth noting that the cable cannot be detached from charging stations with a fixed connection. You’ll need a separate cable to charge in other places.

Single or double charger

Chargers are available with single or double connectors. We recommend going with a double charger where possible as this mitigates against additional installation costs, should you decide to increase the number of electric vehicles at your household.

Offline poles vs. online charging stations

The charging stations that work offline are only connected to the car. Once the plug is connected, the charging station starts to charge and it stops as soon as the plug is disconnected. The online station gives you the possibility to remotely control it, automatically calculate power costs and see the charging history.

Smart Features

Charging stations can be equipped with various smart functions. Read more below about the smart functions of charging stations, so you’ll make the right choice when you’re buying a charging station.

Dynamic load balancing

Dynamic load balancing takes the electrical appliances at home into account and distributes the available power capacity so that the main fuse is not overloaded. This way, your car is optimally charging without risk.

Peak saving

With peak saving you control the maximum current capacity of the charging station. This service prevents excessive consumption during peak hours and unnecessary costs that your network operator may charge when exceeding peak power.

Face recognition

We’re familiar with smartphones using this technology, but now it’s also applied to various charging stations. Charging stations with face detection can be unlocked when an authorised person is standing in front of the charging station. This way you can unlock your charging station hands-free!

Gesture recognition

With gesture recognition you can control your charging station via simple hand gestures. With certain gestures, you can activate or stop a charging session.

Autostart

With Autostart you just need to plug in a charging cable to start charging. A charging station with Autostart does not require a pass, tag or key.

Subscription

Manufacturers of charging stations frequently offer an admin plan. Depending on the provider, you will gain access to various useful features such as consumption reports and billing insights.
